Measuring resource inequalities: the concepts and methodology for an area-based Gini coefficient

چکیده
Although inequalities in income and expenditure are relatively well researched, comparatively little attention has been paid, to date, to inequalities in resource use. This is clearly a shortcoming when it comes to developing informed policies for sustainable consumption and social justice. This paper describes an indicator of inequality in resource use called the AR-Gini. The AR-Gini is an area-based measure of resource inequality that estimates inequalities between neighbourhoods with regard to the consumption of specific consumer goods. It is also capable of estimating inequalities in the emissions resulting from resource use, such as carbon dioxide emissions from energy use, and solid waste arisings from material resource use. The indicator is designed to be used as a basis for broadening the discussion concerning 'food deserts' to inequalities in other types of resource use. By estimating the AR-Gini for a wide range of goods and services we aim to enhance our understanding of resource inequalities and their drivers, identify which resources have highest inequalities, and to explore trends in inequalities. The paper describes the concepts underlying the construction of the AR-Gini and its methodology. Its use is illustrated by pilot applications (specifically, men’s and boys’ clothing, carpets,

Purpose: As the world rapidly moves into the new era of information and wisdom, the needs of human beings to use books and libraries continue to grow. With this in mind, in addition to increasing public library services, it's important for planners to distribute library facilities equitably across the country. In this paper we will study the distribution of public libraries in the Provinces of ...
متن کاملA Rethink on Measuring Health Inequalities Using the Gini Coefficient
Objective: We show that a standardized Gini coefficient that takes into account the feasible range of health inequality for a given health attribute is a better instrument than the normal Gini coefficient for quantifying inter-individual health inequality. Methods: The standardized Gini coefficient is equal to the normal Gini coefficient divided by the maximal attainable Gini coefficient, which...
متن کاملInvestigating the Distribution of Health Resources in Iran by Using Gini Coefficient (2011-2020)
Introduction: One of the most important goals of health systems and policy makers in this field is equality in access to health services. Inequality in the distribution of health resources leads to different health levels between different regions of the country. The aim of this study was to investigate inequalities in the distribution of health resources in the provinces of Iran. Method: This...

Background & Objectives : In recent years, the World Health Organization has paid more attention to the relationship between health and social conditions as determining the factors affecting people's health in the society. Social health factors (conditions in which people are born, grow up, work, and become old, and also the health system available for them) have caused inequalities in health...
